How do I catalog my knife collection instead of using a spreadsheet?

How to catalog a knife collection properly

  1. Give every piece a permanent inventory number the day it is recorded, before you can forget or misplace it.
  2. Record the maker, model, steel, grind, lock type, blade length and weight. These are the specs an insurer or your future self will ask for.
  3. Record the serial number if there is one. It is the field a spreadsheet cell most often gets typo'd or skipped.
  4. Record what you paid and the currency you paid it in, not a guess at current value.
  5. Record where it is stored. A drawer, a safe, a display case.
  6. Take one photo per piece. A spec list without a photo is half a record.
  7. Keep a document you can produce on request: a clean export or PDF, not a live link to your sheet.
