Is there a backpacking gear list app with no subscription and no account?
Last updated: 1 October 2026
Yes, there are several. LighterPack is free on the web. PackLight is iOS only and free, with no sign up. Packstack has a free tier and syncs through an account. Hikt has a free tier with iPhone and Android apps. OutPack has a one-time unlock after a trial. Skinweight is another, with a free plan, a one-time Pro purchase and no account.
They differ in what you give up, so it helps to check a few things before you move 80 items into any of them.
What to check
- Offline use. A web-only tool needs a connection. At the trailhead, with no signal, that matters.
- Account. Some apps need a sign-in even when they are free. Others do not. If you would rather not make an account, check before you start typing.
- What the free tier covers. Count your gear. Find out whether the free limit is on packs, items or features, and whether it expires.
- Data export. Look for CSV export. A list you cannot take out of the app is a list you cannot leave with.
- Sync or backup. These are not the same thing. Sync keeps two devices in step, which usually means an account. A backup is a file you save and restore yourself.
- Platform. An iOS-only app is no use on an Android phone.
Try your real list in an app before you commit to it, and make sure you can get it back out.
How Skinweight does it
Skinweight is free to download on iPhone, iPad and Android. The free plan has no trial and no expiry. It covers 1 pack and 60 gear records that you create by hand. Deleting a record frees its slot.
Pro is US$19.99, paid once, not a subscription. It gives unlimited packs and gear records, pack duplication, side-by-side pack comparison, kits, trips, saved filters and app lock.
If you import a list, every record is kept. The free plan still shows 60 records and 1 pack, and Pro shows everything.
There is no account and no sign-in. It works offline. Your gear records stay on the device unless you back up or export them. In-app purchases and crash and performance diagnostics use the internet. Diagnostics are on by default and can be turned off in Settings under Diagnostics.
CSV goes in and out. The CSV export is compatible with LighterPack and reads back into the app. You can also share a PDF, a single-file HTML page, a share card image or a Markdown table. Each one is a file, not a live link.
Backup saves an archive with every record and photo. You can save it to a folder or to your own iCloud Drive, and it is checked before a restore. Backup is not sync. Two devices will not stay in step, and moving to a new phone means restoring a backup yourself.
The limits: no hosted public profile and no group collaboration. If you want a live link to post in a shakedown thread, a web tool such as LighterPack gives you one.
