How do I track my net worth without giving an app my bank password?
Last updated: 7 September 2026
Use a manual-entry tracker. You read each balance yourself and type it in, so the app never needs a bank login, and nothing like Plaid ever sees your credentials. A spreadsheet does this fine. So does an app built around manual entry, like Worthtally.
The manual method, with or without an app
- List every asset. Checking, savings, investments, retirement, crypto, your home, vehicles, cash. Give each its own row.
- List every debt. Mortgage, credit cards, student loans, car loans, anything you owe.
- Open each account yourself, read the balance, and type it in. Do not link anything. A bank statement or a wallet app is all you need.
- Subtract debts from assets. That one number is your net worth.
- Date the entry and keep it. Add a new dated entry each month instead of overwriting the old one. The history is what makes the number useful.
- Once a year, export the whole thing to CSV. That covers your records and your accountant.
Set a monthly reminder. Ten minutes a month is enough for most people. The trade is simple: you do the typing, and in return no company holds your bank password or a copy of your balances.
This method also covers things a bank link cannot see: a cold-wallet crypto balance, a paid-off car, a house, gold, a private loan to a friend.
How Worthtally does it
Worthtally is manual entry only. It never asks for a bank password and never uses Plaid or any other bank-credential broker. You type in balances and transactions yourself, so nothing breaks when a bank changes its login. It has nine account kinds: cash, checking, savings, investment, retirement, crypto, real estate, vehicle and debt. Everything you own and owe shows as one number, with a trend over time.
Your balances and transactions are stored in a database on your device and never touch a server we run. There is no account, no login, no sign-up. You open the app and start. There are no advertising or analytics SDKs. Live exchange rates and, on Pro, crypto prices come from read-only public price feeds; your figures are not sent anywhere.
Everyday tracking, including unlimited accounts and 90 days of history, is always free. Pro adds full history and is $29.99 once for lifetime access on every platform, or $14.99 a year on the App Store and Google Play if you prefer. Windows is lifetime only. One Apple purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac, with Family Sharing. Nothing forces you into a subscription.
Worthtally is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, the Mac App Store, Google Play for Android, and the Microsoft Store for Windows. It is the same app on each. There is no cloud sync of balances. You move data between devices with your own backup file. On Apple devices, Pro adds automatic iCloud backup.
Everything exports to CSV, JSON or Markdown for free, any time, so the spreadsheet method above is always one export away.
